On a spring morning in 1903, Major-General Sir Hector Macdonald, one of Britain's greatest military heroes, took his life in a hotel room in Paris. A few days later he was buried hastily in an Edinburgh cemetary as his fellow countrymen tried to come to terms with the fact that one of Scotland's most famous soldiers had ended his life rather than face charges against his character. The suicide and its aftermath created a national scandal and one which still reverberates long after those dramatic events - it is now clear that the official files dealing with his case, the papers of the Judge Advocate have been destroyed. Macdonald or 'Fighting Mac' as he was known to an adoring public, was no ordinary soldier. A crofter's son who had risen from the ranks in the Victorian army, he covered himself with glory during a long and successful military career and in 1898 was widely acknowledged as the true hero of the Battle of Omdurman, which cemented British Imperial rule in Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Everything lay at his feet - a knighthood, honours, the respect of fellow generals such as Roberts and Kitchener - but Macdonald's career came to a shocking full stop when he stood accused of homosexuality and was ordered to face a court martial. Unable to come to terms with the disgrace, he committed suicide. That should have been the end of his story but so powerful was the myth created by Fighting Mac that people refused to believe he was dead. Soon rumours were circulating that Macdonald had faked his death and had adopted the persona of a prominent Prussian officer, the future Field Marshal August con Mackensen, one of Germany's great leaders during the First World War. This book answers questions I've received from readers of my two previous books (Neophyte to AM and Maximum Meditation). The two previous books touched on perception and the mental nature of the Universe. This book is written to help readers sort out the implications of that information so that it can be truthfully applied going forward. Having answers does not mean that I want to be a Guru, hence the book title. The Universe is entirely mental and a product of your mind. I know, that's an incredible statement and total idiocy up against your physical and very material experience but it's true. You're having a physical experience brought about by mental machinations. The physical experience is mental vibration developed over an aeon to produce and interactive illusion. The illusion has rules, regulations and limits, all of which can be manipulated and/or broken by the will. The "physical world" as we know it, is nothing more than mental perception of a stream of vibrational information delivered in differing frequency ranges that we call sight, sound, taste, touch and smell. The perceptive illusion produced by the mind from the analysis and projection of the vibrational information has no actual reality, it's fluff to exercise and entertain the mind. It's something to consciously observe and mentally react to. The illusion of action being fed by the illusion of reaction, a self sustaining fire of mental play. The mind is all there is. The Universe is mental.

The movie 'My Beautiful Laundrette' based on the Hanif Kureishi's screenplay and directed by Stephen Frears made its debut in the British cinemas in 1985. It touches on various aspects of conflicts that minorities face. It adheres to sexual identity, class and racial problems by presenting many sorts of emotional bonding and the struggle to find one's right space in society. My focus will be on the narrative structure and the analysis of the characters' behaviours and actions, therefore I did not use many secondary sources. I am going to analyse the film by looking at three leitmotifs: 'love', 'success' and 'cultural rules of behaviour'. These leitmotifs are interrelated and often contradictory, which leads to many conflicts. The family love and support helps Omar achieve great success in his working class situation, which is backed with equal strength by his partner Johnny. Without Johnny he would have been unable to restore the laundrette. His success can also be seen as a result of the Pakistani code of behaviour where it is normal to give a relative a job if there is a chance to do so. However, the conventional rules of behaviour on both sides, Pakistani and British, stand against the relationship between Omar and Johnny and therefore also stand in the way of their success. All the characters present part of a subculture in which they have to strive harder than a middle-class person to be accepted by society. They have to face many boundaries and social problems. 'My Beautiful Laundrette' depicts these hard lives without playing on one's heart strings. It rather illustrates how it is possible to control one's own fate by making the most of the given situation and refraining from believing stereotypes.
