In September 2010, world leaders will take stock of MDG achievements to date at the High-level Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. Much progress has been made since 2000, but there is still a great deal more to be achieved in order to fulfill the promise of the MDGs. In this sense, the global partnership for development stands at a critical juncture, with only five years left until the 2015 deadline to delivery on the commitments made and to achieve the MDGs. Remaining gaps are still very large and there have been setbacks because of the global food, energy and financial crises. The deadline for commitments in a number of crucial areas (including increased aid volume, improved aid effectiveness, and the conclusion of the Doha Round of trade negotiations) is 2010, but there is little prospect of successful delivery. The 2010 issue of the report identifies the implementation gaps in the commitments made under MDG 8 and provides recommendations on how to address them, on strengthening the global partnership, and ultimately supporting developing countries in achieving the MDGs.

This volume deals with policy, methods and techniques for the stewardship of our land and our cultural assets. The focus is on interpretation and presentation of heritage themes, and the papers should be of interest to those concerned with school and university curricula, those working in museums and galleries, and those in charge of parks and tourist enterprises. Individual contributions celebrate achievements and debate issues relating to the natural and built environment, the future of green tourism, planning and interpretation in museums, parks and private estates. The authors include: Professor David Lowenthal on cultural landscapes; Charles McKean on architecture; David Macmillan on the arts; John Purser on music; Elisabeth Luard on cooking; the Earl of Glasgow on the opening of a family estate to the public; and Gordon Baxter on the heritage of one of Scotland's great enterprise stories in the food industry. The main theme of the book is that we do not always take enough pride in our heritage which is often undervalued and neglected. Positive action is required to raise awareness, to foster respect for our inheritance and to generate a new kind of enterprise that will not endanger the heritage resources on which we depend for enjoyment and jobs.

At a time when some of the most sweeping national initiatives in decades are being debated, Congressman Henry Waxman offers a fascinating inside account of how Congress really works by describing the subtleties and complexities of the legislative process. For four decades, Waxman has taken visionary and principled positions on crucial issues and been a driving force for change. Because of legislation he helped champion, our air is cleaner, our food is safer, and our medical care better. Thanks to his work as a top watchdog in Congress, crucial steps have been taken to curb abuses on Wall Street, to halt wasteful spending in Iraq, and to ban steroids from Major League Baseball. Few legislators can match his accomplishments or his insights on how good work gets done in Washington. In this book, Waxman affords readers a rare glimpse into how this is achieved-the strategy, the maneuvering, the behind-the-scenes deals. He shows how the things we take for granted (clear information about tobacco's harmfulness, accurate nutritional labeling, important drugs that have saved countless lives) started out humbly-derided by big business interests as impossible or even destructive. Sometimes, the most dramatic breakthroughs occur through small twists of fate or the most narrow voting margin. Waxman's stories are surprising because they illustrate that while government's progress may seem glacial, much is happening, and small battles waged over years can yield great results. At a moment when so much has been written about what's wrong with Congress-the grid-lock, the partisanship, the influence of interest groups-Henry Waxman offers sophisticated, concrete examples of how govern-ment can (and should) work.

50 Ways To Die is a compendium of death and sometimes violent crimes occurring in the county, and the social trends that surround them. West's research centered on records of Coroner's Inquest and microfilm of the newspaper, Yorkville Enquirer, both of which are archived at the History Center in York. The inquests records had not been studied until West began his research which coincided with members of the staff and volunteers were indexing. A great deal of appreciation is extended to Archivist Nancy Sanbet, her staff and the several volunteers who assisted. And a special thank you to Miles Gardner who gave the idea for this book by his Murder and Mayhem in Old Kershaw. This book gives accounts of murders, suicides, accidental deaths and gruesome infanticides, ending in 1929. West has randomly extracted more than twenty murders, some of which are still retold in local kitchens and living rooms. The list includes the 1929 chilling murder of Faye Wilson King by her husband, Rafe. This murder brought national publicity to the small western York County town of Sharon. Also included is the 1922 murder of playing children by a man angry over water in Clover, and the brutal murder of Johnny Lee Good in 1888. People of York County have murdered over women, food, liquor, money, slander and unpaid bills and they did it with planks, bare hands, guns, knives and even ironing boards. Sometimes these occurred on the spur of the moment with overheated blood and sometimes with cold calculation. While most crimes were white on white or black on black, the subject of race has been excluded expect in cases where mentioning it was for clarification. One thing is clear in many of these cases, justice came to some, and the times were certainly not safe for minorities, the poor, and children.

Pesticide Residues: A Contribution to their Interpretation, Relevance and Legislation contains the papers presented at two special Symposia held in the Pesticide Residues Section at the Fourth International Congress of Pesticide Chemistry (lUPAC). This book is organized into two parts encompassing 17 chapters. Part I focuses on the accuracy of any statement on the amount of residue a sample contains, which is influenced by the interaction of multiple factors. This part specifically discusses some of these factors and their bearing on the analytical result of pesticide residue analysis. Part II deals with the complex problem of whether and how the unavoidable uncertainties in analytical findings can be matched to a legislative machinery accustomed to operating with rigid data. This part also covers the principles for the permission of pesticides from the food-hygienic point of view, with emphasis on regulatory toxicology and tolerances of pesticide residues. This book will be of value to toxicologists, agriculturists, public health workers, and legislators.

The book addresses the challenge Jesus put before the disciples when they asked him to release the crowd to go home so they can get some food to eat because it became dark, but instead of releasing the people Jesus asked the disciples to feed the crowd themselves. They were unprepared, they gave all the excuses, but Jesus was serious. He fed the crowd bread, fish. Can pastors and church leaders answer to this challenge within the body of believers' context? The church needs to have an holistic approach in ministry to provide the necessary care for God's flock. The service to Jesus is expressed by the love his servant has for him. Pastors and church leaders can make great difference in believers lives to bring real change that presents the reality of the Gospel. Yes, the believers are on their way to heaven, but they still live on earth. Therefore, they have to deal with many challenges they face in their daily life in this present century. The church is not doing enough to help the people in the pews or chairs, especially the needy person, who face all kinds of challenges. A believer can worship the Lord and feel the presence of God, feel that he or she is ready to go in heaven, but that does not prevent him or her to still struggle with many issues in life such as: Emotional, family, divorce, financial, social, job, spiritual, health, physical, physiological issues just to name a few that I addressed in the book. The bible remains a great source and resource of information for the contribution of biblical leadership of the Old and New Testaments. Jesus is the owner of the church. His love for the church, his investment in the disciples make the church what it is today, his trust and his vision, mission for his church mean a lot and can challenge the pastors and church leaders to do ministry with love. The different challenges the church of Jesus-Christ face in this present century and the church needs to acknowledge and deal with them.

A collection of intriguing and unusual details from one of the biggest events in Irish history. The 1916 Rising was Ireland's first step on the road to independence, but even those who know a great deal about it may not know that there were temporary ceasefires around St Stephen's Green to allow the park-keeper to feed the Green's ducks. Few know that the first shots of the Rising were actually fired near Portlaoise or indeed that both sides issued receipts: the rebels for food, the British for rebels! 50 Things You Didn't Know About 1916 features excerpts from two previously unpublished diaries - one written by a civilian, and one written under fire by a member of the Jacob's factory garrison. It also tells the story of how the British Navy shelled the routes into Galway city to disperse rebels under the command of Liam Mellows, and how the officer who took Pearse's surrender went on to become a Hollywood star.50 Things is a treasure trove of information that will appeal to the avid student of 1916 as well as the casual reader.

In the whirlwind of life with three young sons, an active member in her tight-knit community, Ruth Rakoff felt in supreme control of her wide world. But when a routine mammogram revealed a tumor, that world rapidly shrunk down to the size of one breast. And so begins the journey of biopsy, surgery, chemotherapy, all accompanied by tidal waves of anxiety and grief: how to tell the children? Should she consider having a healthy breast removed, in case the cancer returns? Will food ever taste good again? Amid all the worry and change, there is also overwhelming gratitude for a stalwart network of family and friends who strive to help and support, to comfort and delight - even as everyone longs for the old normal of daily life. Through stories, confessions and anecdotes, Ruth Rakoff shows just what is at stake when cancer shows up at the party uninvited. There is no sugarcoating of either the physical or emotional pain of dealing with the disease or the effects of the poisons used to combat it. But for Rakoff, a life without laughter is not worth living. Brazen and irreverent, Ruth tells us that socks, no matter how luxurious, are not a cancer present. That no number of crystal-waving shamans can beat the healing power of good food, good friends and a raucous night on the town. And that just because you have cancer, you don't have to be a better person. Far more than just a recounting of disease and recovery, When My World Was Very Small is an intimate, colorful, one-of-a-kind memoir that celebrates life, love and family. From the Hardcover edition.

I am not an athlete, a professional or a nutritionist.I'm not one of those genetically lucky people who can eat whatever they want and not put on an ounce of weight and then annoy you with their fitness advices. I'm not a 'gym-rat' either, although I like exercising every once in a while. I am an artist; an ordinary person who USED TO have weight issues. To be honest I enjoy writing fiction more than information books; however, when you've lived and learned, a lot, and you know that it takes years to get to that point for an average person you don't want to keep it all to yourself. Life is too short for spending on something that was so easy to achieve if you had only known a few key points. That's one of the reasons I've written this book and several others where I share my experiences. Having said that I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do and I'm definitely not going to take responsibility for others' actions. It's not my place. I just want to show what's worked for me and that it CAN be done. When it comes to weight loss in a healthy way I have two main factors; "secrets", if you will. They are way too simple. Both are going to be at the end of the book somewhere. Mind you, all the rest has been incredibly useful too. But those two factors seemed to have made everything else very easy for me to deal with and inspired me showing me quick results. Let me explain it with numbers. In the good old days, when I didn't apply those two factors, here's how it went: If I ate normal portions of reasonably healthy food my weight stayed at 70 to 75 kg (approx. 140 to 150 lbs.).If I ate a bit too much my weight went up to 75 to 80 kg (approx. 150 to 160 lbs.).If I ate very much unhealthy food my weight went up to 80 to 85 kg (approx. 160 to 170 lbs.) possibly more, although thankfully I never got there. After I've realized those two factors, here's how it goes nowadays: If I eat normal portions without being too careful, my weight is around 68 to 70 kg (approx. 136 lbs. to 140 l

Ive heard from many people who are interested in reading books about anarchism (allthough i think the term anarchism is incorrect) that most books about anarchy are heavy and difficult to get through much less understand because they aim their content to readers that have a good backround of political understanding (its terminologies, its schools of thought, its currents and so forth.). If this happens to be your problem then this book will be ideal if you want to discover what this political philosophy stands for and what its issues are and, indeed, have been for a long time. Emma Goldman, a woman with as fiery a personality as they come, has put together here a number of essays about anarchy that are easy to comprehend and definately thought inspiring. Despite this book having been first published in 1917 it loses nothing of its importance in the current state affairs as all of the issues Goldman deals with not only remain unsolved but they have -in the meantime- become a social burden or a social disaster much worse than back in her time. Oh, and back in her time things already looked bad enough. What you get here is, summarily, the following: -anarchy, what is it and what does it stand for? Beyond the mainstream media cliches anarchy stands for personal and societal freedom of the highest conceivable order. A freedom, anarchists insist, that is not a utopia. Its basically a hard lesson in crushing your illusions and opening unthought of doors of perception of what freedom really means. That would be then something other than being in a cage and having food thrown in. Even if the cage is invisible. -Hard punching essays about the prison system and the everself-destructing notion of patriotism. Funny how every line one reads in there couldve been written yesterday. Not much has changed. After decades and decades of the imprisonment system has society become more law-abiding? That would be a thundering no. Why is that? As for patriotism, the incredible notion
