The hadal zone represents one of the last great frontiers in marine science, accounting for 45% of the total ocean depth range. Despite very little research effort since the 1950s, the last ten years has seen a renaissance in hadal exploration, almost certainly as a result of technological advances that have made this otherwise largely inaccessible frontier, a viable subject for research. Providing an overview of the geology involved in trench formation, the hydrography and food supply, this book details all that is currently known about organisms at hadal depths and linkages to the better known abyssal and bathyal depths. New insights on how, where and what really survives and thrives in the deepest biozone are provided, allowing this region to be considered when dealing with sustainability and conservation issues in the marine environment.

Out of the night came Jan and into the lives of all those at the company post on Lac Bain, in the Canadian Northland. Jan, almost starved and frozen, enters into the lives of John Cummins and Melisse, his daughter, playing his violin for food. He stays to become a beloved member of their family and the community. But Jan has a deep mystery about his past that haunts him. When a stranger shows up at the camp, this hidden past is threatened exposure. Jans mystery unravels as he faces life at the remote outpost during the early 1900s, a smallpox outbreak at the camp, and his love for little Melisse. It is the Honor of the Big Snows, part of his heritage, that Jan must keep, and that leads him to leave the post searching for his honor in his past. In The Honor of the Big Snows, which is not as widely read as some of his other novels, James Oliver Curwood delves into a part of the culture of the people that he lived with and wrote about in this Canadian wilderness of the early 1900s. The ethics of the half Native American - Cree, and half French Canadian, born out of Catholicism, the love of nature, and Cree mysticism - these ethics are the "honor" of the big snows or the snow country of upper CanadaThis novel deals with the ostracism and sometimes revenge that happens when the honor system is broken. It is a passionate novel with raw feelings and relationships born out of very painful circumstances. It is not the light and easy going novel as some of Curwoods other stories, but well worth reading if you are interested in this particularly unique culture born out of the mixing of races and religions, far from civilization in an era when culture and opinion were formed and passed along without todays mass communication but by the spoken word passed from snow-shoe born messenger to the dwellers of teepee or log cabin. The The Honor of the Big Snows by James Oliver Curwood deals with a complex and unorthodox story around Jan. Even today, many people will identify with Jan and

Animal Products in Human Nutrition evaluates the contributions of food derived from animals to a balanced diet. The individual chapters in this book are organized into two major sections. The first section begins with a history of the use of animal-derived foods from the early ages of mankind, followed by a treatise of economic and resource costs of animal foods, including use of industrial and agricultural by-products and fish. Trends in the changes in the composition of American diets and the metabolism and disposition of common environmental toxins within animal tissues are also included in this section. The second section details the essential nutrients provided by animal products, as well as the possible effects of consumption of animal products on the development of hypertension, milk intolerance, infections from food-borne bacteria, cancer, and atherosclerosis. This book will be useful to agricultural scientists, journalists, professionals that deal with human nutrition, and human nutritionists and dietitians.

This issue of the Regional Economic Outlook: Middle East and Central Asia provides an in-depth look at the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (MENAP) region, as well as the Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA). Four chapters deal with MENAP oil exporters, MENAP oil importers, policy challenges facing MENAP, and sustaining the recovery in the CCA countries. Two developments mark the outlook for the MENAP region: the social and political unrest and the surge in global fuel and food prices, which have resulted in unusually large uncertainties in the near-term economic outlook. Meanwhile, growth in the CCA countries was higher than expected. Three main policy challenges to CCA countries are rising inflation, heightened social pressures to spend, and the poor quality of bank portfolios. Job creation and poverty reduction are key objectives for all CCA countries.

Most of what we know today about how the human brain functions has been learned only very recently. In just the past few years, the amount of brain research in the world has increased tremendously. The sheer number of neuroscientists now devoting considerable time, energy and resources to the study of the inner workings of the brain is remarkable. These ongoing studies and phenomenal technological advances in the field have led to startling discoveries, turning conventional wisdom about how we use our heads practically upside down. It's time for us now to take this new-found knowledge and apply it to how we think, learn and communicate. Just as we know what kinds of foods and exercise can help us perform better physically, we also know what kinds of ideas and principles we need to help us perform better mentally. This is a book about the way we use our brains - or, at least, the way we should use our brains - to face and manage issues we deal with daily. By combining much of what we know from the disciplines of brain research, learning theory and the communication field, Brian Thwaits offers innovative yet practical suggestions that will give those three-pound organs inside our heads an adjustment that will not just invigorate and revitalize them, but will actually change how we think, remember and share information with each other. After reading The Big Learn, you will have made the happy discovery that your brain is capable of much, much more than you ever thought possible.

The intelligent dolphins, the giant whales and the inoffensive Dugong or sea-cow are among the most fascinating creatures in the wild. Every aspect of their way of life is astonishingsome of them use sound to see in the water, some of them dive to incredible depths in search of food, and some of them sing complex songs. Marine mammals are so intriguing that worldwide there is a multi-million dollar industry in just watching these animals. Yet, in India few are even aware that there are many of these creatures in the seas around the countrya full fourth of the worlds 120 or so species, in fact. This is due to the lack of information about them. Most existing records are scattered in various scientific journals. No book published so far covers this group of Indian wildlife adequately. This book is meant for a wide range of readers including children, wildlife enthusiasts and serious students. A significant part of the book is devoted to the more than 30 species accounts, which make the book a useful reference. Glimpses of their lifestyles are given through several essays dealing, for example, with the phenomenon of mass strandings of whales or the reputed ferocity of the Killer Whale. Further, color illustrations and character matrices meant for easy identification make Marine Mammals of India a useful field guide. The extensive bibliography makes the book a valuable research aid. The accounts of whaling and other threats faced by marine mammals highlight the conservation requirements of these animals

NEW EDITION, REVISED AND UPDATEDOne of America's historic strengths has been our ability to incorporate aspects from many different cultures to create a stronger whole. Our music, literature, language, architecture, food, fashion, and more have all benefitted. But leadership approaches have remained distressingly Eurocentric. Juana Bordas set out to change this in the first edition of this influential book. She showed that incorporating Latino, African American, and American Indian approaches to leadership into the mainstream can strengthen leadership practices and better inspire today's ethnically rich workforce. This message has only become more urgent. The 2010 census revealed that in four decades minorities will constitute over 50 percent of the population-and in one decade a majority of Americans under age eighteen will be nonwhite. More than ever we need a leadership model that resonates with our country's growing diversity. Bordas incorporates this latest census data into this second edition, which now identifies nine-rather than the previous edition's eight-core leadership principles common to all three cultures. The new principle deals with intergenerational leadership, of vital importance now that many organizations will have four generations working side by side. Using a lively blend of personal reflections, interviews with leaders from each community, historical background, and insightful analysis, Bordas illustrates the creative ways these principles have been put into practice in communities of color. The multicultural leadership model developed in this book offers a more flexible and inclusive way to lead and a new vision of the role of the leader in organizations and in our increasingly multicultural world.

Book Summary My desire and intent in writing this book is to capture in print and with photographs; glimpses of my younger years during the great depression and share it with my readers. Being born and raised on a farm in rural Mississippi I strive to share the good and bad times I experienced as a young lad in a time when we had lots of love for family, love and respect for God and Country but precious little financial resources. The book covers a span of time from my early childhood years thru my teenage years. I also want to acquaint the younger generations and others less familiar with the agricultural lifestyle about the tools and practices that were common during the depression years. This background taught me a great deal about the value of hard work, perseverance, the necessity of self-discipline, the value of an education, faith in my Creator and the pleasure experienced by seeing a job well done. My background taught me not only to enjoy the simple pleasure of good fellowship with family, friends and church members; as well as acquaintances in my community. We even shared our meager blessings with the less fortunate of God's children, like hobos who came by looking for food. We also learned to respect and deal with the dangers of infantile paralysis, diphtheria, whooping cough, malaria, measles, mumps, hydrophobia and the hazards prevalent during those times. We learned to love God and Country by our experiences with our church and the Baptist faith. We gained a sense of patriotism and duty to country by witnessing the grief and loss experienced by our friends and neighbors who lost love ones during World War II. These combined experiences shaped my life for all time to come.

Uncovering the day-to-day routines and activities of a family with seven children should be interesting in any age, but when it covers Depression years to World War II, it s especially revealing. The narrative throughout is in rhyme, and the author is dealing mostly with first-hand experiences so she brings the common and not-so-common aspects of the Sanders family into bold relief. How to celebrate Christmas when there is virtually no money for gifts; how the father attempts to discourage the chicken-thief; how to keep food on the table when the bread-winner has trouble collecting for the household products he has sold door-to-door; and the isolation experienced when TB forces the mother to live for a year in a sanitarium out of town. The richness of the details in this narrative demonstrates the storehouse of memories possessed by Ms. Barnes as well as the insights gained from being a first-hand protagonist in this family s struggle. The six children who grew to maturity had many relatives nearby. The closeness of these relatives displays a dimension of community often lacking in our hectic, modern pace. Of special interest is the way this family (and especially the parents) devoted themselves to their church and its outreach. God s work came first, as much of the father s activities will demonstrate. Not a steadily unfolding plot, but more like a series of intriguing cameos, this narrative portrays a picture of one family s involvement in Mid-western culture of the? 30s and? 40s. These verses, laced with humor and pathos, show that a home is truly blessed where there is mutual love and a rich spiritual heritage.
