'Apart from derivation, compounding is the most important event within the process of word formation, i.e. the combination of two or more freely distributed morphemes or morpheme sequences (words) to a compound, whereby - as a rule - the last constituent determines both word of speech, as well as inflectional class' (BUBMANN 2002: 360). This definition of compounding is based on several linguistic works and theories, one of which Elisabeth Selkirk's Syntax of Words is one of. This work will focus on Selkirk's account of compounding and make a comparison between the English and Dutch language. Thereby, I will summarize Selkirk's main points and contrast them to comparable qualities of the Dutch language. My aim is to examine whether or not and in what way Selkirk's account of compounding in English is universally applicable. This examination will comprise the main topics Headedness, Right-hand Head Rule, Percolation, and First Order Projection Condition. Headedness, Right-hand Head Rule, and Percolation in English In her work The Syntax of Words, Selkirk defines English compounds to be 'a type of word structure made up of two constituents, each belonging to one of the categories Noun, Adjective, Verb, or Preposition' (1982: 13). She suggests a context-free grammar for generating compound word structures - consisting of a set of context-free rewriting rules - (cf. 1982: 13 - 16). and furthermore differentiates endocentric compounds from exocentric (nonheaded) compounds. The first kind shows a head customary on the right and is predominant in English (cf. 1982: 19) (such as in snowflake, songwriter, starlight, and underground), while the second, rather exceptional kind has no head at all (cf. 1982: 19) (such as in hunchback, pickpocket, lazybones, cutthroat, and redskin). I've revised them in order to clarify the thoughts and to "tighten" up the arguments. My goal is to defend and clarify what Catholics believe with regard to ecclesiology, or the doctrine of the Church (including the papacy), why we do, and to demonstrate that Catholic beliefs are in harmony with Holy Scripture and the doctrines held by the early Church. Protestants deny the infallibility of the Church, and hold that Scripture alone is the only final, infallible authority (denying that characteristic to the Church and apostolic tradition and the papacy). Therefore, if Catholics can show that an infallible Church and papacy are squarely based on Scripture, Protestants would be bound to those beliefs, by their own rule of faith (sola Scriptura). My aim is to demonstrate exactly that.

Let me sum up my perception on what went wrong in Vietnam. It was a Right wing war fought on Left wing premises. It was a war that could not have been won because those who designed it would not or could not win it-but were also afraid of losing it. It was a war that was wrongly perceived by both sides of the ideological spectrum. The Liberal argument was that America tried everything and 'still' lost it! The Conservative argument was that it could have been won if the opposition had not tied their hands, keeping them from an all out effort that would have been required to win it. The war was started in earnest by the Liberals under Kennedy. The strategy was to roll up the enemy by hitting on the peasant and through it, cut off the leaders. At the back are heavy arches of whitewashed masonry and a low wall which serves as a parapet. Green blinds are drawn. There is a bamboo table on which are copies of illustrated papers. A couple of long bamboo chairs and two or three smaller arm chairs. The floor is tiled. On one of the long chairs Harold Knox is lying asleep. He is a young man of pleasing appearance. He wears white ducks, but he has taken off his coat, which lies on a chair, and his collar and tie and pin. They are on the table by his side. He is troubled by a fly and, half waking but with his eyes still closed, tries to drive it away. Knox. Curse it. [He op ens his eyes and yawns.] Boy! Wu. [Outside.] Ye. Knox. What's the time? [Wu comes in; he is a Chinese servant in a long white gown with a black cap on his head. He bears a tray on which is a bottle of whisky, a glass and a syphon. Wu. My no sabe. Knox.
