Kinshasa is sub-Saharan Africas second largest city. The seven million Congolese who live there have a rich reputation for the courageous and innovative ways in which they survive in a harsh urban environment. They have created new social institutions, practices, networks and ways of living to deal with the collapse of public provision and a malfunctioning political system. This book describes how ordinary people, in the absence of formal sector jobs, hustle for a modest living; the famous bargaining system ordinary Kinois have developed; and how they access food, water supplies, health and education. The NGO-ization of service provision is analysed, as is the quite rare incidence of urban riots. The contributors also look at popular discourses, including street rumour, witchcraft, and attitudes to big men such as musicians and preachers. This is urban sociology at its best - richly empirical, unjargonized, descriptive of the lives of ordinary people, and weaving into its analysis how they see and experience life.

Urgent Tales-a book of surreal stories that lay bare the terrors hidden under our collective beds and confront us with our own fears. Comprised of eleven supernatural and cautionary accounts of sideshow freaks, vampires, aliens, and other mythical creatures, these tales blend horror with dread-induced humor, granting us entry into the world of the inexplicable, the irrational, and the delectably bizarre. In "Astor Roth," a young entrepreneur's inner demon emerges from her subconscious past to draw her into a monstrous and debasing reality. Set in Vienna, a successful yet vulnerable woman struggles to keep her sanity before she is consumed and possessed by her demonic lover. A serial killer watches the affairs of his next victim-her nightly ablutions, her ritual of the bath. He waits in the darkness until it is time to "transform" his prey into an objet d'art and add the woman immersed in water to his oeuvre of mutilated masterpieces. A vampire stalks the streets of Rome, Barcelona, and Miami Beach in search of sustenance, only to find he is not the one on the top of the food chain but merely a part of it. In the stories "Deal," "The Magus," and "SoBe It," the ruthless yet cerebral vampire Alejandro encounters nemeses as cold-blooded and resolute as he in their quest for power and blood. Two ex-lovers' expectations run interference for their living counterparts in the story "Reunion." Unbeknownst to their human hosts, they revisit a past filled with possibilities, consequences, and circumstances not anticipated. The dreamer dreams, or is it the dream that dreams the dreamer? In the tale "Tatiana's Dream," a brilliant antiquities professor is sought out by a fantastical vision and sent forth to discover her destiny in a multidimensional universe she not only inhabits, but must somehow control.

The Constant Catastrophe: Malnutrition, Famines, and Drought deals with the 1972 drought, and emphasizes the underlying social conditions that are related to its effects. The book examines the relationship of drought as a meteorological event and the famine that results as a social event. The effects of natural catastrophes become transformed by social structures and political processes in many countries of the world, more than which can be attributable to the physical cause itself. A striking parallelism that emerges in the study is that climatological analysis implies reference to large scale space and time processes. Famine also occurs as anomalies within large-scale processes in society-famine changes nutritional levels in communities. The text proposes a theoretical framework for a methodologically-adequate diagnostic tool that can be used in studying the "factual events" in previous cases of major disasters due to climactic factors. Case studies include those that happened in the Sahel, Ethiopia, India, China, the United Kingdom, and Brazil. Among several recommendations, one which the book proposes in the management of the effects of drought, is to adopt an approach similar to that of the Red Cross. The book is suitable for economists, environmentalists, ecologists, and policy makers involved in crisis management, food production, and rural development.

On a touring holiday in south-west France, a young English couple, Jennifer and Peter Robbins, quickly fall under the charms of the Lot region a land of wide meandering rivers, wooded hillsides, rugged moors and quaint stone villages bathed in warm sunshine (not to mention the more worldly pleasures of good food and curiously strong drink). Their holiday takes a step into the unknown when they decide, on impulse, to purchase a house in need of restoration in the remote and pretty village of Lecul-en-Quercy. During their frequent visits, they get to know many of the local characters, including Thomas Chêne, the wily mayor; Maisie Connell, the English estate agent who has special techniques for promoting business; Messieurs Blanc and Grospetit, the rival bakers; Marie, the Mayor's long suffering sister and reluctant spinster who daily faces the challenges of computers, community keys and the temperamental town-hall toilet. The Robbinses also have to deal with incomers like themselves William Montgomery, the retired palaeontologist with a deep secret; Gilbert and Nancy, who impress the locals with their fertility; Stéphanie de Chartres, with her out-of-place airs and graces, and even President Jacques Chirac. But it's the hilarious situations that prove the most memorable the hunter's dinner, where British honour is at stake; the annual snail race, when extreme steps are taken to ensure victory; the terrible revenge meted out to an ambitious mobile trader; the auction of the beer-drinking billy goat; the curious consequence of the incomers' visit to the cemetery that divides the community, and the pending disaster that brings them all together again. And all this in a village that, due to a cartographer's deafness and a faulty telephone, has been removed from the Michelin maps since 1939.

Medical tourism is one of the fastest-growing businesses on earth. With the rising price of treatment in the UK and long waiting lists, there's never been a better time to combine a trip abroad with a treatment. Plus many other countries have not been affected by the deadly MRSA bug in the same way that the UK has - another reason why going outside the UK is an attractive option. Hospitals overseas are clean, well-staffed and the food is great. What more could you ask for? Nothing - except the guide to know where to go - and here it is. The first section of the book deals with the different types of medical procedures and at the end of each is a cross-reference to countries listed in part two. There are 24 countries you can visit which will give you the help you need at a price that can't be matched in the UK.

Anthropologists training to do fieldwork in far-off, unfamiliar places prepare for significant challenges with regard to language, customs, and other cultural differences. However, like other travelers to unknown places, they are often unprepared to deal with the most basic and necessary requirement: food. Although there are many books on the anthropology of food, Adventures in Eating is the first intended to prepare students for the uncomfortable dining situations they may encounter over the course of their careers. Whether sago grubs, jungle rats, termites, or the pungent durian fruit are on the table, participating in the act of sharing food can establish relationships vital to anthropologists' research practices and knowledge of their host cultures. Using their own experiences with unfamiliar-and sometimes unappealing-food practices and customs, the contributors explore such eating moments and how these moments can produce new understandings of culture and the meaning of food beyond the immediate experience of eating it. They also address how personal eating experiences and culinary dilemmas can shape the data and methodologies of the discipline. The main readership of Adventures in Eating will be students in anthropology and other scholars, but the explosion of food media gives the book additional appeal for fans of No Reservations and Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel.

To me, growing up in South Philly was truly a wonderful and great experience. I really believe that you must have lived there yourself to really understand exactly what I am saying and why. You see, to me South Philly is unlike anywhere else, and I will try to make you understand why. South Philadelphia is a place of living life to the fullest and really appreciating it. There were wonderful foods, fast cars, beautiful girls, and really good deals for things that supposedly just happened to drop off the backs of trucks, love, caring for others and their situations, and much more.

Home is where the heart bleeds. Children of the Night, Book 3Growing up, vampire-born twins Julie and Marc Fischer were taught one simple fact of life: you can choose your food, but not your family. Six months after moving to San Francisco, though, the new challenges and choices each are facing are a Gordian knot of complicated. Marc must decide whether to stay with Conrad and Damian, the only family he's ever known, or embrace his destiny and the unexpected family-the ferals-that comes along with it. Meanwhile, Julie is forced to deal with the unpleasant realization that the man she loves isn't necessarily the man who's best for her. For Conrad and Damian, the holiday season is stirring up bittersweet memories, and neither can keep from revisiting past passion and pain. Faced with new mysteries to solve, new alliances to forge, new secrets to keep, and old relationships to rebuild, it's no wonder the Fischer-Quintano vampires long for the good old days-when food was food and family was all that mattered. Warning: If you've previously suffered from Disco Fever, this book could precipitate a relapse. Extreme care is recommended for anyone with a pronounced weakness for mistletoe, fang play, pretty young men of either species or extremely dangerous alpha-male vampire single dads. May contain trace amounts of polyester.

The first book ever on the much maligned nettles of the world presents a story of these followers of mankind and his cattle throughout history. This study centres on the most abundant and sub-cosmopolitan common stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), but also deals with other nettles throughout the world. Tropical tormentors rich in species include the notorious nettle trees with their formidable stings which fascinated the Europeans after their discovery by botanists on the round-the-world trips of exploration in the 17-19th centuries. Many people on their travels will have met the nettle trees of the Indo-Malay region and other stinging nettles in North and South America, India, etc, which sting and have beautiful flowers but are called nettles; these are also dealt with. The first microscopists and their descriptions of the beautiful stinging hair; the uncovering of the mechanism of its action and the more recent elucidation of the toxins causing the characteristic symptoms is a fascinating one and takes up 3 chapters. The book includes the 100 major scientific works published on the common stinging nettle and never brought to the notice of the general public before. The author spent six years studying the ecology of the nettle patch, its invertebrate herbivores (mainly insects) and vertebrate herbivores (cattle, deer, etc,) and their interactions with other plants: its secret life is recorded in line drawings and photographs (1000+ individual items). It was not possible to publish these in colour but they are in full colour on a CD-ROM (300 dpi) at the back of the book. Covered also are nettle folklore, fibre use in World War I & II, as a food, fodder, herbal medicine, growth as a competitor plant, habitats, sex (unique exploding stamens), breeding systems, variation, evolution etc! Some the world's most beautiful butterflies would not exist without nettles.

The movement towards juicing and juice fasting as a dietary option is growing as both a lifestyle practice and as a viable industry. Whether household or commercially based, it is essential that users serious enough to purchase products take the time to educate themselves with regard to the numerous options that are available. Equally important, knowledge of sound and safe juicing practice is essential in matching both juicing equipment and foods to individual need and preference. Juicing programs require direction in order to allow for proper and successful planning. This book examines many of the considerations related to successful juicing. It looks at basic equipment requirements, outlines options for start-up and selection of programs and products, and provides numerous ideas on how to go about creating pleasantly tasting juice mixtures. A great deal of the article is devoted to nutritional considerations, outlining benefits, potential hazards, and specific guidelines for best nutritional choice juicing practice. A significant consideration dealt with is how to best approach juicing as a means of weight loss. Closely related, the book also presents guidelines for successful juice fasting."People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas."~ Eric Tompkins

Cardiovascular drugs have dramatically changed the way we treat heart disease in the last decade-allowing us to effectively combat hypertension, lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart attacks, and, in some cases, even reverse heart disease. Yet, if you are on of the more than 30,000,000 Americans who take heart drugs, chances are you are not getting all the information you need to take these medications safely and effectively. Dr. Martin Goldman has written the first book that deals with all the issues surrounding the use of these life-preserving drugs-how they work on the body's systems and how life-style, diet, and exercise enhance or impede their effectiveness. In clear and accessible prose, using examples from his own practice, Dr. Goldman also presents guidelines for choosing and communicating with your cardiologist, examines the value of new screening tests and procedures, and even shows patients how to keep a cardiovascular diary to monitor their own heart care. The second half of the book provides comprehensive profiles of more than ninety commonly used heart drugs-among them beta blockers, anticoagulants, and antihypertensives-examining their possible side effects; their interactions with food, alcohol, and other drugs' and life-style alterations to consider while using them. This is an indispensable guidebook for anyone concerned about complete cardiac care.

ABOUT THE BOOK "Gluten-free" seems to be all the rage these days. As diagnoses of gluten sensitivity and the autoimmune disorder Celiac disease have increased, more and more restaurants are offering gluten-free options, some supermarkets have aisles dedicated to the stuff, and even national coffee shop chains have jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon. Even people without allergies have begun to eschew gluten, citing improved digestion, clearer thinking, and better moods. So what's the deal with "gluten-free"? What does it mean? Is it just a gimmick? Or is it a healthful eating choice? And here's the big question: can you lose weight by adopting a gluten-free diet? All these questions will be answered in this guide, but let's get the biggie out of the way: yes, you can lose weight by adopting a gluten-free diet. You can also, however, gain weight on a gluten-free diet. Ditching the gluten is not a dieting "Get Out of Jail Free" card. Switching out wheat and other gluten-containing foods can help your body streamline its fat-burning processes and improve your overall health, but it's not a magic bullet. Gluten-free foods can contain just as much sugar, fat, artificial preservatives, and other "bad" stuff as their "normal" counterparts. MEET THE AUTHOR Lily is very close to finishing her Ph.D. at the University of Oxford. She also has an utterly non-lucrative Masters of Fine Arts in poetry. "Lily McNeil" is a pseudonym. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Although Celiac disease affects less than 1% of the population, it is a serious autoimmune condition that is triggered by eating the gluten protein. In response to the protein, the small intestine destroys its own villi, which are responsible for absorbing nutrients from food. Without these nutrients, the body becomes severely malnourished. That's where a gluten-free diet comes in. Those who have Celiac disease must adhere to a very strict diet of no gluten whatsoever, even in vitamin pills and lip balm. But even if you don't have C

Confectionery and chocolate manufacture has been dominated by large-scale industrial processing for several decades. It is often the case, though, that a trial and error approach is applied to the development of new products and processes, rather than verified scientific principles. The purpose of this book is to describe the features of unit operations used in confectionary manufacturing. In contrast to the common technology-focused approach to this subject, this volume offers a scientific, theoretical account of confectionery manufacture, building on the scientific background of chemical engineering. The large diversity of both raw materials and end products in the confectionery industry makes it beneficial to approach the subject in this way. The industry deals with a variety of vegetable based raw materials as well as milk products, eggs, gelatin, and other animal-based raw materials. A study of confectionery and chocolate engineering must therefore examine the physical and chemical, as well as the biochemical and microbiological properties of the processed materials. By characterizing the unit operations of confectionery manufacture the author, who has over 40 years' experience in confectionery manufacture, aims to open up new possibilities for improvement relating to increased efficiency of operations, the use of new materials, and new applications for traditional raw materials. The book is aimed at food engineers, scientists, technologists in research and industry, as well as graduate students on relevant food and chemical engineering-related courses.
